The publisher, Simon Pulse/Simon & Schuster, kindly offered me an advanced reader copy (ARC) of Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw via Edelweiss. Yet, this is an honest review of the book expressing my personal opinion.
First of all, I should say that I adore The Wicked Deep, the debut novel by Shea Ernshaw. I loved Shea Ernshaw’s storytelling, and I was sure I was going to love Winterwood, but ‘love’ is a mere understatement.
Winterwood speaks from the rawest corners of my souls, speaks truths I didn’t know I had within me. The emotions are visceral, vivid, each with a life of their own. The characters are authentic, real, and not only do you relate to their emotional turmoil, but it becomes yours.
The world-building is delightful, and the setting descriptions so visceral and alive, true to Shea Ernshaw’s eerie prose. Every element flows naturally and effortlessly with each other, weaving a story of loneliness, the need to belong, to be loved, and the freedom of being who you are whomever that is. The characters are so different from each other–unique, relatable, and with a life that jumps out of the page and into your heart.
I knew I’d love Winterwood, but I had no idea it was already a part of me waiting to be reunited with me. Winterwood is easily one of the best books of 2019, and the recent years, in fact. It became an instant all-time favorite from the first chapter when I found myself re-reading each page to re-discover and re-experience Shea Ernshaw’s words all over again.
World-building and setting, excellent, eerie, and effortless like raindrops falling to the ground. Characters with a depth and emotional journey that you feel in your bones and never want to let go. A story you’ll never forget, no matter how many years pass and how many books you read.
Winterwood is my soul, and the very definition of a must-read.
